Biologia y Medio Ambiente -- BMA (Spain)

This SME was set up to perform environmental impact studies for the Spanish and Regional governments. The staff is specialized in ecology and botany studies, with main focus on cyanobacteria, algae and lichen taxonomy and ecology.

Biologia y Medio Ambiente has participated in research projects and contracts from the Spanish Ministry of Education and the Catalonian Commission for Research over the last six years for the study of the lichenic flora of the Iberian peninsula and Balearic islands. In addition, it was a partner of the European project: "Development of an innovative water repellent biocide surface treatment for mortars: assessment of their performance by using modern analytical tools and surface analysis", contract ENV4-CT98-0707.

The staff has discovered several new species of fungi, cyanobacteria and lichens, describing them for science.

Role in the project

The BMA will identify changes in the biological cover of building stone due to meteorological and climate change effects and will evaluate biodeterioration vs bioprotection processes induced by climate changes. It will integrate several different climate variables relating to temperature and precipitation, in order to develop models of biological crusts (or biofilm) in response to major environmental disturbances, and prediction on biodeterioration processes. Four scenarios will be assessed to estimate the potential impact of climate change. They include variations in global precipitation runoff ranging from an increase of 0 - 25 mm/year to a decrease of 150 mm/year, which are the predictions for the different regions of Europe (ICPP, 2001).
The BMA will record meteorological parameters during exposure time for eventual correlations. In addition, it will accomplish the survey for cyanobacteria, algae and lichens on selected European monuments.
